       Request for Some Advice

I've got a problem and I thought that maybe someone could provide some advice.

I have an idea for a new method of storing, indexing and retrieving any kind of data and file on any type of computer.  This new indexing would make possible applications not envisioned today and an expansion of the capability of current ones.  People seem to be stuck in a pattern of building systems and solving problems with current technology.  No one seems to be asking: "Is there a better way?".  Well, I have a better way.

Enhancements to current database systems seem to be a logical first step.  Industry applications which appear to be a natural fit are to be found in archival storage, billing/claims/eligibility, scheduling, large group research projects, software configuration, investigation and intelligence (like the CIA).  These same applications are the very ones with limitations due to status-quo thinking.

I have written letters to most of the major database players and a few minor ones (ones that looked like they knew how to "think outside of the box") and have received a similar reply from some of these.  The others have simply ignored me.  The common replied: "Tell us the idea and we will consider it."

Now, the problem.  Most of these companies employee people much smarted than myself, and once I tell them the idea, well, what use will they have for me?  NONE!

If I filed for patent protection (assuming that I could afford the lawyers and filing fees) then I have just told the world the idea.  I might as well publish it here.

So, the request for advise: Can anyone think of a way to solve this puzzle?

How do I establish a relationship with a company where they only pay after hearing the idea and decide to use it, and still afford myself protection going in?  If they decide not to use it, how do I secure an agreement that they won't proceed anyway?

This idea is, in concept, like the Coca Cola story: 'Put it in bottles.'  I can describe the concept in a couple of sentences and fully outline the details in a few pages.

I would like to make some money by selling the idea and anyone helping me to a solution will receive a percentage of any compensation I receive.

I'm very old school - my word and a handshake are the only contract I require.  I'm not sure the world works that way any more.

Your problem is exactly the same as mine: How do you provide me advice (and idea) and insure that you will receive your share of the proceeds?  Therefore, unless you are providing advice out of the goodness of your heart (which I will graciously accept), your 'solution' will be self demonstrating.

My thanks in advance (and please, serious replies only),

Tom Phillips
